John Robert Anderson (USA)

Bass luthier John Robert Anderson of Brookline, MA and Ridgewood, NY built his first bass in 1983.

His focus is on compact, easily transported instruments with big sound.

This model, called Tirol Americana, features a 102.5cm string length with full bass, great projection, and a gorgeous, easily accessed upper range. The black cherry wedge or “spine” at the center of the back plate adds torsional flexibility and honors the celebrated 19th-century New England bass luthier Abraham Prescott.

Anderson’s Tirol Americana and American da Salo (chamber) models are demonstrated on YouTube by free jazz virtuoso Brandon Lopez of Brooklyn, NY. [See “Brandon Lopez Plays Anderson Solo Bass…”] The competition bass pictured here was sold at this year’s ISB convention in Ann Arbor, MI.
